Dyslexia Support

Dyslexia support – What we do and why

What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a learning difficulty that primarily affects the skills involved in accurate and fluent word reading and spelling.

Assessment and diagnosis

At Eltham Hill school we screen students using ‘The BDA Dyslexia screener’ If a student shows signs of having Dyslexia, they will be offered a full Dyslexia assessment. This will be carried out by a qualified Dyslexia teacher, or an LA specialist.

Intervention given to students at Eltham Hill

Students in KS3 are given the opportunity to access either one to one or small group support a minimum of one hour per week. Classes are delivered either before or after school for students in KS4.

During this intervention pupils follow a multisensory teaching programme using the ‘Alpha to Omega programme’, alongside reading books, other kinaesthetic materials and ICT.

Some students will also be offered handwriting intervention where necessary. Pupils are given the opportunity to use other resources when in class such as reading rulers, Apha Smarts, laptops (for the older students) cream coloured paper and exercise books where appropriate.

We also offer a Dyslexia Support Club who meet twice weekly to share startegies, trial resources and raise awareness of Dyslexia in the school community.
