Year 7s Trip to Meet Author Ollie George Clark

On Thursday 10th of September, 7S got to have a special treat! They visited Eltham Library to meet author of ‘Youngest Faircrest and the Search for a Sorcerer’ Ollie George Clark.  

Ollie explained the setting and characters of the book and he showed us the brilliant illustrations as well (by Tom Knight). The book is the first in a set of books. He told us that there is a new one out next week and another next year, so we are looking forward to finding out more and reading them when they are published.  

Three things you’ll find in this book: 

• A laugh-out-loud fantasy world filled with monsters, magic, and mayhem. 
• A fiercely loyal best friend and a trusty piglet with a surprise or two up his (non-existent) sleeves. 
• A spellbinding story of courage, friendship, and self-discovery. 

Ollie revealed the process of his writing and students were very lucky to learn about how to structure a great story. This is great as it links in with what we are learning this term in English in terms of myths and legends. Ollie then led a session where students came up with their own ideas for a story, creating ideas for a beginning, middle and end. They had to vote for which characters they wanted in the story and for what would happen at each stage. All of 7S had fantastic, creative ideas from flying pigs who love marshmallows to turtles with spines on their backs. I think we have some budding writers and film-makers in this class as the librarians and Ollie were very impressed with their story ideas.  

We had a really lovely time and we are hoping to have more author events at the library in the future. Our thanks to Eltham Library for organising and to Ollie for his great presentation. We will be getting some copies of his book for the library so please do take the time to borrow this when it arrives.
